Willie Smits Restores A RainForest
Many people wouldn’t know about people like Willie Smits and the projects they do if it weren’t for TED. Smits’ reforestation project was brought about by a simple act of saving an orangutan from a local market. In figuring out how to save a population of orangutans, he realized that the culture of an entire community needed to not only change, but to be redesigned. In this talk, he shows how the environment can be re-established and a community can be taught to take care of it. He insists his work should not be applauded, because the reason for it should never have happened.
